Well, since then a lot more phones using the Android operating system have been announced and a lot more free apps have appeared on the market place. Here’s a list of my favorite Android apps for journalists and blogger. (You can find them all by search for their name in the Android Market.)

wpToGo

wpToGo is a free WordPress client that allows you to post, edit posts, and attach photos and videos from your phone.

AP Mobile

AP Mobile is a client that gives you the latest headlines from the AP and can be customized to also include local news sources.

Listen

Listen is a Google app that allows you to subscribe to podcasts and have them automatically downloaded to your phone.

Qik

If you have never seen Qik before, it’s time you check it out. Qik allows you to broadcast live video directly from your G1 to the web. Go to http://www.qik.com and set up a free account, then download the Qik client and start broadcasting from your cell phone.

AK Notepad

This notepad application is far better than the standard that comes with the G1. AK Notepad has a reminder feature which allows you to set an alarm for a text file to remind you to update it. It also gives you the option of sending your text files through email, SMS, or other applications such as a Twitter client you may have installed. You can change the appearance through themes and adjust the text size. AK Notepad also lets you put a sticky shortcut to a text file on your home screen.

Twidroid

This is by far my most favorite Twitter client for the G1. It has a nice user interface and gives you quick access to your profile, your favorites, mentions, and direct messages.

Voice Recorder

Seemingly a simple voice recorder, the option that sets this one apart is the ability to email your recorded voice memo immediately. This can be useful if you simply don’t have a notepad handy, or if you want to walk around an event describing the scene and the people without drawing attention by speaking into a voice recorder. Once you’re done recording, this app gives you the option to title and send the recording right away, or to save it for later.

Pandora

Last but no least, there is finally a Pandora client for Android phones. Now you can listen to your favorite Pandora stations on the go. This one is bandwidth heavy, so unless you have a good 3G or WiFi connection it might not work perfectly.

The standard software and features that come with the phone will allow you to accomplish most tasks. You have a full web browser, email, a camera, a video recorder, notepad and full QWERTY keyboard, GPS, and quick access to Google search and Google Maps. But sometimes you need software that is not included with the phone, and the G1 Market has tons of free software to meet most of your needs.

This is a list of my personal favorite G1 Applications that I think would be useful while working on a story on the go.

DroidTracker

DroidTracker allows you to publish your current location using Twitter or for people to send you a text with a pass-phrase and automatically get a response with your current location. This app can be useful when working in a team environment, covering a big event with multiple reporters, or if you are simply live-blogging from somewhere and want people to know your current location. Another cool feature of this app is that Lost/Stolen function, which lets you track the whereabouts of your phone and even force it to take pictures and upload them to Picasa.

Wapedia

A wikipedia client that gives you nicely formatted pages and a user interface that makes finding the right information a breeze.

Draw!

This is a simple paint application that let’s you make quick sketches and save or share them. You’ll have the option of sending your sketch through email, MMS, Picasa, and Twidroid (if it’s installed, of course).

PicSay

PicSay is a photo editor that lets you edit and share pictures from your G1. The free version limits the resolution of the picture, but it should still be enough if you are sharing pictures over mobile devices of sending them over Twitter. PicSay let’s you quickly add a title, highlight certain parts of the image, distort others, and then send the picture through email, MMS, or other applications such as a Twitter client (Twidroid recommended). Ok, I do admit that this application is more fun than productive, but it could be useful for some things.

The power of smartphones is being recognized quickly. The Iran election protests showed that anybody with a cellphone is a potential cameraman or citizen journalist.

Here’s an example of a professional broadcast journalist using the video camera on the new iPhone to shoot an entire story and run it on air: http://cbs4.com/video/?id=78304@wfor.dayport.com. And here’s a link to a Poynter chat about this story: http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=2&aid=166352

While this is a good example of how to use new technology in journalism, I dislike the fact that the media only discusses the iPhone, as if it is the only option, or the best choice for everything. There are plenty of other smartphones on the market. The iPhone is good, but ‘media’ people need to open their eyes to technological developments around the world, not just the latest shiny products being put out by Apple.

If you are like me you have often had a hard time trying to record a phone conversation. Sometimes you might be in a noisy environment and you can’t put the person on the speaker phone, or other times you might get the call on a phone with no speaker phone at all.

After looking around for a while, I think I have found the easiest and most reliable way to record a phone conversation.

The Olympus TP7 Telephone Pickup is basically a little microphone that you plug into your ear. You simply hold the phone to your ear, just like you would on any regular phone call, and the microphone picks up both ends of the conversation.

The TP7 can be plugged into any tape or digital recorder–like you see in the picture–or it can be plugged directly into the mic input on your computer.

The microphone itself comes with a 1/4 inch mono jack, but adapters for 1/8 inch mono and 1/4 inch stereo are provided as well. This should make the TP7 work with almost every kind of portable recorded on the market.

What I really find great about this little thing is that it is such a simply solution to what seems like a complex problem for me. You can be sure that no matter when or where you take a phone call, you can always easily record it. Since the microphone plugs into your ear, you always have one hand free to take notes, or doodle, depending on the importance of the interview.

Below is an audio sample of a quick recording I made with the TP7. I just called my bank’s 800 number, so don’t expect anything interesting. But you can hear both sides of the conversation and I think the quality and clarity is really good.

And the best thing about the TP7 is the price. I got mine from Amazon for under $18. I read a couple of reviews before I bought this and one guy mentioned paying $50 for the same thing.
